Advocate Abdul Rahman Usman

Madras High Court · City Civil Court, Allikulam

I practise in Chennai, mainly in property, family and tenancy matters, with chambers at the Madras High Court.

I work at pace, and I run the practice to the standard I would want as a client: papers ready before the hearing date rather than on it, messages answered within one working day — the same working day when something is urgent, and nothing left to drift because no one looked at it.

I keep this site because most people who come to me have already been frightened by half-information. Understanding the process is itself a form of relief.

Outside chambers I read Tamil legal history and mentor first-generation law students at the city bar. I mention it only so you know the person you would be sitting across from — not a call centre, not a form.

About two years of litigation practice in the Chennai courts, learning under senior advocates of the Chennai bar — among them J. Janarthanan, in practice since 1991.

Vakyl Rahman (vakyl.in) is the independent website of one enrolled advocate, Abdul Rahman Usman, practising in Chennai. It is not a lawyer marketplace, directory or legal-services platform, and is not part of or affiliated with any.

## How matters are run here

Litigation is slow, and no advocate can honestly promise otherwise — the listing, the other side and the court’s docket are not within anyone’s gift. What *is* within an advocate’s control is **preparation, diligence and communication**. That is what is offered here, and it is worth being plain about what it means in practice.

**You are told where your matter stands**What happened on the last date, what the next one is for, and what is expected of you before it. *Without having to ring and ask.* **A plan from the first sitting**What the case needs, in what order, and by when. A matter without a plan is a matter that drifts, and **drift is what turns two years into ten**. **Settlement is raised when it is the better course**Many disputes are worth settling, and some are worth settling early. You will be told plainly when that is so — **even though a settled matter earns an advocate less than a contested one**. **Honest about time at the outset****A realistic range before you commit**, not an optimistic one to win the engagement. If your matter is likely to be long, you will hear that on day one. **Only what can be given attention**A practice that takes on everything gives nothing proper attention. Where a matter is outside this practice’s areas, *you will be told that rather than signed up*.

Whether this is the right practice for you

If what you want is *a matter kept alive indefinitely* — filed, adjourned and left running for its own sake — **this is not the right practice**, and it is better that both of us know that at the start. The work here suits people who want to **understand their position, decide what to do about it, and get it done**.
